Transition Management
IMPROVing Change and Transition Management
Leveraging Improv to Explore Ambiguity
Change rarely arrives with a clear script. Most of the time it shows up mid-scene, unannounced, asking leaders and teams to improvise their way through something nobody fully planned for. The leaders who do this well are not the ones who had all the answers in advance. They are the ones who could stay present, listen deeply, build on what emerged, and keep moving forward even without a complete map.
This improv-based change management workshop brings together the YES, AND principles of improvisation with the change and transition frameworks that help leaders and teams navigate ambiguity with greater clarity and confidence. Participants begin with hands-on improv exercises that activate presence, adaptability, and the willingness to build on uncertainty rather than resist it. The session then connects those experiences directly to the concepts of change and transition, exploring how improv principles help individuals and teams move through the psychological and organizational dimensions of change more effectively. The result is a workshop that makes the abstract experience of transition feel concrete, navigable, and even energizing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does improv help leaders and teams navigate change and transition?
Improv develops the exact capabilities that change demands: staying present when the situation is unpredictable, listening and building rather than resisting and deflecting, and maintaining forward momentum even without a complete picture of what comes next. This workshop makes those capabilities experiential rather than theoretical, so they are genuinely available when leaders and teams need them most.
What is the difference between change and transition in this improv-based change management workshop?
Change is situational and external, such as a restructure, a new direction, or a shift in priorities. Transition is the internal psychological process people move through in response to it. This workshop uses improv to explore both dimensions, building the adaptability to respond to change itself and the awareness and empathy to support people through the transition it creates.
Do participants need any improv experience to benefit from this workshop?
None at all. The exercises are designed for non-performers and are focused entirely on the leadership and communication skills needed during change. The environment is supportive and safe to fail, making it accessible and genuinely valuable for participants at every level of the organization.
How does YES, AND thinking specifically help during organizational change?
YES, AND creates a posture of openness and forward movement rather than resistance and avoidance. In a change context, it helps leaders and teams acknowledge the reality of what is happening, build on what is available, and move forward rather than getting stuck in what was lost or what remains unknown. It is one of the most practical and immediately accessible tools available for navigating ambiguity with confidence.
Can this workshop be tailored to a specific change our organization is currently navigating?
Yes. The Leadership Laboratory works with organizations to connect the workshop's improv and change frameworks directly to the specific transitions a team is moving through, making the content immediately relevant and applicable to the real situation participants return to after the session ends.
