IMPROVing Executive Presence
Enhancing Confidence and Rapport
with Your Audience
Executive presence is one of those qualities that is easy to recognize and surprisingly hard to define. It is not about being the most polished or the loudest person in the room. It is about the ability to walk in, be fully present, connect authentically with whoever is in front of you, and make people feel like what you have to say genuinely matters. The good news is that presence is not a fixed personality trait. It is a learnable skill, and improvisation is one of the most powerful tools available for building it.
This executive presence and public speaking workshop applies the core principles of improvisation directly to the challenges of commanding a room, building authentic confidence, and connecting with any audience. Participants engage in hands-on improv exercises specifically chosen to develop the qualities that define strong executive presence: active listening, in-the-moment adaptability, authentic confidence, and the ability to make every person in the room feel genuinely engaged. The conversation throughout is focused on leadership communication, public speaking, and the rapport-building skills that make a message land with real impact. Participants leave with a tangible shift in how they carry themselves, communicate under pressure, and connect with the people they lead and influence.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does improv training build executive presence?
Improv develops the core components of executive presence from the inside out: the ability to be fully present, listen deeply, respond authentically, and stay grounded when the unexpected happens. Rather than teaching techniques to perform, improv builds the genuine confidence and adaptability that make presence feel natural rather than rehearsed. Leaders who have done this work consistently describe feeling more themselves in high-stakes situations, not more polished.
How is IMPROVing Executive Presence different from Mission Possible: Strategic & Creative Design Sprint?
Both workshops address leadership communication and influence, but they approach it through different methodologies. Mission Possible focuses on strategic thinking as a tool for increasing our sphere of influence and storytelling frameworks. IMPROVing Executive Presence uses improv exercises as the primary development vehicle, with the focus on embodied confidence, authentic connection, and audience rapport. The two workshops are highly complementary and work powerfully together.
Do participants need any improv or public speaking experience for this workshop?
Neither is required. The exercises are designed for non-performers and are focused entirely on leadership communication skills. The environment is supportive and intentionally safe to fail, which means participants build genuine confidence through real experience rather than through technique or performance.
How does YES, AND thinking apply to executive presence and public speaking?
YES, AND thinking builds the kind of present-moment awareness and openness that makes a communicator feel genuinely engaged rather than scripted. Leaders who operate from a YES, AND mindset listen more fully, respond more naturally, and create more authentic connection with their audiences in meetings, presentations, and one-on-one conversations. That responsiveness is a defining quality of compelling executive presence.
Can this workshop be customized for leaders preparing for a specific high-stakes communication situation?
Yes. The Leadership Laboratory works with organizations to contextualize this workshop for specific contexts, whether that is preparing for a leadership transition, a major presentation, an organizational announcement, or an ongoing need to communicate more effectively with senior stakeholders and executive audiences.
